» About Us:
Our History and What We Stand For-
Brandeis University was founded in 1948 by members of the American Jewish community. The University was named in honor of Louis Brandeis, the first Jewish U.S. Supreme Court Justice. Brandeis was a scholar who worked to support social justice, an activist who promoted change gently but insistently by working within the system.
His spirit has infused this University, creating a school of freethinking intellectuals and compassionate doers. When Brandeis people see something they view as wrong, they instinctively yearn to right that situation. We're idealists, full of passion and drive.
Our faculty has included people like First Lady and human rights activist Eleanor Roosevelt; composer Leonard Bernstein; Marxist philosopher Herbert Marcuse; Abraham Maslow, the psychologist who created the theory of "self-actualization"; and Anita Hill, legal scholar and pioneer activist against sexual harassment.
Our students are academically focused, with proven records of high school achievement; more than 60 percent are in the top 10 percent of their high school classes. Early in our history, Brandeis became known as a university that values "the life of the mind." We were ranked as a highly selective university just 20 years after our founding.
Brandeis students think and act, locally and globally. Locally, our student-run Waltham Group helps out in Brandeis's hometown by tutoring schoolchildren, sponsoring blood drives, delivering meals-on-wheels, and training students to become Big Siblings. Globally, Brandeis graduates volunteer to serve in the Peace Corps at one of the highest rates per capita of any small college in the country.
Our alumni include human rights activist Shen Tong '91; Yippie leader Abbie Hoffman '59; Ms. magazine founder Letty Cottin Pogrebin '59; and Tom Friedman '75, New York Times columnist and winner of three Pulitzer Prizes.
Not exactly passive, complacent sorts. Brandeis people are anything but indifferent.
